New Music Tuesday: US5

Along with beauty and fashion, music is another one of my favorite areas to explore. European pop sensation US5 is the newest band to take over my ipod. Their sophmore album "In Control" is a fabulous mix of heart felt ballads and up beat dance songs. Plus, each member is super cute too!

7 Most Wanted Hair Cuts

From the wedge to the blunt, stay up to date with the latest styles with today’s top cuts.

Simply a Shag: This cut is typically short and layered, featuring more layers at the crown area than in the length. Bangs create an added to twist to liven up this look.

Wonderful Wedge: This mid-ear-length cut is all about lines. Starting with the top layers, hair gradually gets shorter, creating the illusion of longer hair with the benefits of a short mane in tact!

Casual Crop: This super short trim is for the free spirited fashionista. A subtle bang compliments the close cut, adding a splash of style.

Beautiful Blunt: Straight and solid: the blunt bob is all one length, creating the appearance of thick, full hair. Here, a flat iron is the perfect styling tool to smooth out unruly manes.

Radical Razor-Cut: Create texture and add shape with a razor inspired do. This choppy cut is ideal for thick hair since ends are tapered.

Amazingly Asymmetric: Whether gentle or extreme, this cut creates an angle effect. If you want an edgier look, opt for longer strands toward the front.

Lovely & Layered:
Layers add height and fullness to lifeless locks. Plus, this is a great cut for all hair types, coming in any length.

Brie Larson

Here at The Glam Guide we love to be the first ones to bring our readers the latest trends and happenings in and around the music world. So, when we got word of hot new artist Brie Larson, checking her out topped our list! Ms. Larson already won the hearts of fans with roles in hit movies such as Sleepover and 13 Going on 30. Not only is Brie making waves on the silver screen, she toured with teen heartthrob Jesse McCartney. Her debut album, Finally Out of P.E., mixes together up-tempo pop beats with catchy lyrics and incredible musical range. But, Brie doesn’t just sing, this triple threat can even play guitar too! Let’s see what actress turned singer Brie Larson revealed to me in this exclusive one-on-one interview…

When did you first realize you wanted to become an entertainer?
I realized this was something I wanted to pursue, while I was in the 2nd grade. My class was going to do a Thanksgiving play. I wanted to get the part of the Indian that chases the turkey! You were able to choose which part you wanted, but you had to turn in a permission slip. So, I told my mom I had to be the first person to turn it in because I had to get this part. I just ran across a stage, chasing this little turkey. Afterwards, moms were coming up to my mom saying wow. I took that role very seriously! So, my mom thought this was something I would like to get into. But, at first I was really shy, so it took me awhile before I was able to come out of my shell.

Which song off your album has the most meaning to you?

The song closest to my heart is called, “Ugly”. I have always been really, really insecure. Everyone always think because you are singing or getting to be on tour with Jesse McCartney that you are fully confident and just love yourself the way you are. That really wasn’t the case. I was really insecure about myself. I used to get in these funks, where I would wake up one morning and be so incredibly depressed. I would just cry and never leave the house. I would just stare at myself in the mirror. After going through these ups and downs, I finally realized I should write all this down. I keep a journal and write songs all the time. Weeks later, I went back to look at it and said wow I really don’t want to feel this way anymore. I ended up turning it into a song. It’s actually the song I get one of the biggest responses from. Girls always feel so alone when they are growing up and becoming a woman. I think the song really reached out to a lot of girls. I have had fans email me saying they have eating disorders and after listening to the song they stopped. That’s really powerful.

What was shooting your first music video like?
It was awesome! I have such a distinct memory of it. I had never done a music video before. I had no idea what to expect. I had a really early call too. Days start on music videos at close to 4 AM. I get there and we do the first shot. Surprisingly, the crew could have just taken this first shot and made the whole entire video. That really boosted my confidence! Actually, Chris Applebaum who directed the music video is like my best friend. It is really nice to have someone direct you who really loves the music and just loves you as a person.

What should audiences expect when they see you perform live?
A lot of energy! Even my band was really surprised the first show, since they had only seen me in rehearsals. I really don’t go full out at sound checks. So, during the first show, they were all stunned. I like to have fun. It’s weird because I never remember what I do on stage. I have an alter ego too. I’m Piper when I am on stage! She’s crazy.

What was the best part about touring with Jesse McCartney?
Jesse is just a sweetheart. I love hanging out with him. I enjoy hanging out with the band and having a tour bus. I love getting to do shows every night. It’s somewhat of a steady schedule. I get up; do sound check, interviews, and then the show. I like to stay busy. I love the type of audience Jesse brings. They are such a fun group of people that are willing to dance and sing along and not care what anyone else thinks.

What are some beauty products that you can't live without?
First off, Lancôme’s Juicy Tube Lip Gloss and Carmex! I think I am addicted to Carmex. Basically, I love anything else by Lancôme. They sent me a bunch of stuff like their pressed powder. I use Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. I actually have a lot of drug store brand stuff. I also use Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation. It is so cool! It is everything I hoped it would be and more. It looks really natural and blends in really nice.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair?
When I have long days, I usually wear it straight because my hair is naturally curly. When I ever I try to curl it, it always looks really bad. So, it works better if I just keep it straight for the whole day. But, it usually ends up in a ponytail by the end. I can’t go a day without putting my hair up!

What is your daily hair care regimen?
I use Rusk Bright Chamomile and Lavender Color Brightening Shampoo to keep my hair from going yellow. I have a pet peeve about yellow hair. So, I use this purple shampoo. I am always changing my hair color. In pictures, sometimes it is red. I have brown hair then I go really blonde. Then, it will be ash blonde. Since I am always coloring my hair, I make sure to use products for dry hair all the time.

Which stores are a must when you hit the mall?
I am more of a thrift store kind of girl. But, I love Urban Outfitters. The Salvation Army is like my best friend! The Salvation Army by my house is so awesome. Every other Saturday, it is 50% off. So I go there with my friends. I got a whole new wardrobe for this tour because I can never wear the same outfit twice. I was able to get 6 new shirts for $5! I go in the little kids’ section too. I got a little boy’s tuxedo jacket. It’s so much fun!

What is your ultimate goal for the future?
For me, I would love to have a stamp. I know it’s a weird answer, but I was at the post office and saw all the people who had stamps: Elvis Presley and Mother Theresa. Everyone changed the world in some way through music, movies, or even charity. I think it would be awesome to have a stamp because you know you did something to change the world and change people’s opinion or mind.

Celebrity Beauty Q&A

What are some of the beauty products you can't live without?

Amy Lee of Evanescence Wow that’s a tough one. I like guys that wear a little eyeliner. That is really hot. I am horrible at my own makeup. I have a makeup artist that goes on tour with me. I am so bad at this stuff! I am into clothes a lot more. I love fashion design. I go to Urban Outfitters more than anywhere else!

Rachel Bilson I love Bobbie Brown bronzers like her Shimmer Brick. Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers are my favorite!

A Trip Down Wisteria Lane

As the mischievous Andrew Van der Kamp, actor Shawn Pyfrom adds to the ongoing excitement on ABC’s hit series Desperate Housewives. Each week, his character crafts cunning plans to get even with his prim and proper mom, Bree (Marcia Cross). From Wisteria Lane to Hollywood Boulevard, Shawn is teen regular on and off the screen. His impressive resume is filled with countless TV spots, feature films, and commercials recently working with entertainment favorites such as Kristin Davis and funny man Tim Allen. Looks, brains, and personality: Shawn is definitely a great addition to primetime TV!

Describe how your life has changed due to the fame and success you have reached.
It really hasn't changed all that much. I go to a lot more events and I work a lot more often, but really, other than that life has stayed about the same.

What is a typical day on the set of Desperate Housewives like?
A typical day is going in, doing a couple scenes with Marcia while goofing around half of the time!

Did you ever imagine Desperate Housewives would be this successful when you started the pilot?
No, not at all. I think we were all surprised by how successful this show has been, and we're all very grateful for it becoming the hit that it has.

Do you have a favorite Housewive?
I've got to give it up for my TV mom, Marcia Cross.

What is one thing you would like fans to know about you?
I'm not like the character I play on TV. I'm a little better in real life!

If you had to pick: Making TV shows or filming movies?
I would pick TV for the family environment, but movies in terms of my professional career

For dinner I like to make:
Pizza! I make the pizza usually with a tortilla for the crust and then the rest is pretty typical for a pizza; sauce, mushrooms, olives, and tomatoes.

What do your friends think of your life as an actor?
Being that most of them are actors as well, it doesn’t matter. This has been a great thing.

Watch me ask college students what they think about new trends in celebrity weight.

Autumn Catwalk Trends

4 Looks That Ruled the Cat Walk

From Paris to New York, new collections on the runways set the pace for autumn’s fashion trends. Slouchy, wide leg pants and the sweater dress rule this season’s must have lists. Fall’s focus is sleek and sophisticated. Hair matched this appeal, featuring smooth, chic hairstyles perfect for your inner glamour goddess. Let your look showcase your facial features and structure. Hair is no longer your mask! Show off those cheekbones with these catwalk creations.

1. Low Ponytails
Opt for a polished, low centered ponytail. Forget the height and gather hair at the nape of your neck instead. Flat iron straight or curl your locks to add depth to the tail. Fasten with a decorative clip or band for extra oomph. A shine spray is essential to add brilliance to your mane.

2. High Chignons
Buns are back! Channel your inner ballerina and radiate with class. Gather hair in a ponytail and tightly twist locks into a circle. A medium hold hair spray will keep your look in check. Add decorative bows and barrettes for a new spin on this classic style.

3. Sleek Asymmetry
Countless designers choose a simple, straight mane as the runway look of choice. Side parts are an easy way to create instant layers. Straightening products are the key to copy this look. From smoothing balms to round brushes, straight is in.

4. Full Mid-lengths
Add height and volume to liven up your look. Loosely pin up hair, letting part of the length shine through. The key to this style is an unstructured, free flowing mane with height at the roots.

Fall Hairstyle Forecast

Hair experts weigh in on the hottest looks and hair colors to copy as the leaves change

Every change in season signals the beginning of new style transformations. Must have hairstyles and colors recycle in and out of fashion just as quickly as they appear. What’s hot? What’s not? Get ready! It’s time for top hair experts to reveal the latest and greatest looks to wear as we say goodbye to the summer sun and hello to fall fashions.

Cut Fall is all about keeping things short and sweet. Now is the perfect time for that much needed trim. Removing 1-3 inches is a great way for an instant hair makeover. Add more bounce to your step during autumn’s cooling trend. Split ends will vanish, reducing the appearance of unwanted frizz. A new cut will revive lifeless locks just in time to fight winter’s drying effects.

According to Jason Kearns, owner of Kearns Davidson Hair & Skin Care in Toronto, Canada, “This fall we will see a progression towards shorter hair cuts replacing the shattered chopped up hair of the past few seasons with stronger lines and more dimension”. Ladies, let your layers grow out and avoid over texturing hair with razors.

Which trends are perfect for autumn? The blunt bob is a great example of visible lines. Straight and solid: this cut is all one length, creating the appearance of thicker, fuller hair. This is a great style pick-me-up for thin, limp locks. Long strands can easily weigh down hair. Add perk to your mane with the botox for hair: bobs!

The infamous wedge cut is a flirty mid-ear-length with an emphasis on lines. Starting with the top layers, hair gradually gets shorter, creating the illusion of longer hair with the benefits of a short mane in tact. Curly or straight, this style works great with both. Asymmetric and angled cuts are the perfect combination of lines and dimension. Whether gentle or extreme, this cut creates a slant effect to your hair. Minus the presence of layers, asymmetric strands use straight lines to add depth to the cut. If you want an edgier look, opt for longer locks toward the front.

Color Say goodbye to the typical summer blonde and hello to your inner brunette bombshell. Change your color to reflect the fall foliage. Color Technician Kathleen McMahon of Kearns Davidson Hair & Skin Care in Toronto, Canada predicts, “Highlights will always be here, however over-processed blondes are gone. The shift is towards warmer more radiant tones, and translucent color to emphasize cut, natural body, texture and sheen.” Instead of blonde highlights, opt for deeper tones like caramel, strawberry blonde, and auburn.

Ultra sheer blondes are a trend of the past. Return to nature’s roots and color your mane with Earth tones. “There is an end to the days of “Done looking hair”, she adds. “Fall is all about catering to one’s individual beauty.” Choose rich and sultry solid colors in the brown family. Shades like espresso, mocha and chocolate are perfect choices for fall.
Celebrity hairstylist Bryant Renfroe, known for his work on ABC’s The View, predicts the trend of versatile color. “I see extensions for adding color (highlights/Lowlights).” He adds, “It is easier to clip in extensions with out making a long term commitment to a certain style.” Easily experiment with color to match your personality and mood. Plus, clip in strands mean no roots and high maintenance touch ups!

Style Now, the perfect hairstyle is key to combine with fall’s hottest cuts and color. As Bryant Renfroe reveals, “The thing that seems to me to be happening, the most now and even more in the fall, is changing hair as you would your clothes.” Style should never be static. Like an endless shoe collection, hair should never be limited to a few select looks. Don’t be afraid to try new styling tools and products. What are his must have do’s? “I see curl, volume, and buns.”

Curls: From tight ringlets to loose waves, curls are here to stay. This style can be created in a number of ways. If you have extra prep time on your hands, hot rollers create a voluminous sea of curls. Opt for different sized rollers depending on the look you want. An investment in a great ceramic curling iron is always a fashion do. Ceramic protects hair without frying your locks, producing silky, shiny strands. Other curl enhancing options include assorted braids, sponge rollers, and three barrel irons.

Volume: Dull, lifeless locks are history. Voluminous styles add an extra oomph to limp hair do’s. Look for volumizing or thickening systems. Ingredients like Vitamin B, wheat, rice, and vegetable proteins add strength and body to each hair strand. Don’t worry! Teasing is no longer a fashion faupax. Use a comb to create lift at the roots with steady downward movements. Smoothing this area out, softly comb the hair into your style of choice. Volume enhancing styling products amplify the boost.

Buns: Fun and flirty to sleek and chic, buns offer variety. You can gather hair to the side, near the crown, or at the nape of your neck. Don’t forget to pick a style to fit the occasion. If you are on the job, for example, opt for a simple chignon gathered at the bottom of your neck. Plus, buns are easy to create! They are low maintenance and simple in design. A brush and rubber bands are all you need. A touch of hairspray will control stubborn fly-aways. Whether naturally straight or curly, chignons compliment any hair type.

Spa Review: Eyebrow Shaping

In A Nutshell: Channings Day Spa is located in a trendy section of downtown Chicago. Oak Street is known for its fashion and chic boutiques.

Cheryl broke down the service for me step by step. First, she examined my eyebrows and sanitized them with a Tea Tree lotion. Next, she described her vision for the reshaping. Cheryl carefully plucked both my brows to match in size and shape. Then, she showed me how to enhance my eyebrows further by using a product called Brush On Brow. Finally, she specified “Pluck” and “No Pluck” zones to maintain my beautiful brows.

The Best Part: I never realized the importance of eyebrows before Cheryl came to my rescue. The brow reshaping instantly gave me a new look. She shaped my eyebrows to accentuate my eyes and compliment my facial features. I felt like a different person after the session. Plus, no waxing was involved!

On top of that, Cheryl has plucked the brows of numerous celebrities from film and TV. Immediately, I knew I was in good hands.

The Rating: Without doubt, this experience rates a five on my scale. This spa service is a great way to get a new look without spending a lot of time or money. Since I was so excited with the results, I scheduled another appointment with Cheryl. Channings Spa now has a new costumer for life!

Star on the Rise: Lalaine

It seems that there isn’t a girl out there today who hasn’t fallen in love with the hit Disney series, Lizzie McGuire. But even though Lizzie came to end, don’t freak out! I guarantee you will be seeing a lot more of the cast. Lalaine, known for her role as “Miranda”, already has several new projects in the works. I got the chance to chat with Lalaine about everything from music to makeup. Let’s see what she had to say…

How did you get started as an actress?
My sister, Cristina, always sang for my parents when she was younger and I was about three years old. I wanted the attention she was getting, so I followed her footstep. I started singing and one thing led to another.

What stores are a must when you hit the mall?
I love Forever 21, Hot Topics and Melrose. My eyes are always looking for clothes that are different.

If we were to look in your makeup bag right now, what would we find?
I love Mac for their eye shadows, and lip stuff. But I have been using Clinique for my concealer. I am such a make-up junkie, especially eye shadows. I love the colors.

When you are not on the go, what is your favorite way to have fun?
I love to chill out with my friends. I cherish the time I have with them. My friends are important part of my life. Also, I love being with my brother and sisters when they are not working.

BOYZIIMEN Exclusive

When the BOYIIMEN tour bus rolled into the Windy City, it was no wonder they got the whole city talking. Luckily, Wanya, Shawn, Nathan, and Michael took time from their busy schedules to chat it up with me! Read on to find out what these legends of music had to say…

As a group BOYIIMEN has accomplished an enormous amount of fame and success so far, but what are your personal goals for the future?

Wanya: I would like to be successful with anything that I endeavor or try. I have always wanted to be an actor. Right now, I am writing and producing some new material. I have even written some scripts. I just want to be successful, raise a family, have kids, and for the most part be happy.

Nathan: In the future, I would like to be a very successful producer and songwriter. I have great aspirations for that. Being an artist is completely different from writing your own material. Sometimes, people will only look at you as one or the other, not both. Due to that view, I would like establish myself as a well-known songwriter later on in my career.

Shawn: I would also like to be an established songwriter as Nathan just pointed out. In addition to that, I would like to release a solo album one day. I hope to do this on my own label without the help of the conventional process of signing to one. I would like to have my own thing. It doesn’t matter to me about record sales anymore. I’m at a point now where I want to do various projects freely without any corporate structure telling me what I should or shouldn’t do. I also have my own movie production company. It has already done one movie and we are hoping for more.

As legends and role models for a multitude of recoding artists, what advice do you give for those getting started?

Shawn: You should trust your gut. Always go with your first feeling on things when it comes to the creative side of the business. A lot of us get caught up in the corporate structure once we reach a certain amount of success; I feel you should preserve what helped you get to that point. Hold it dear to your heart. There will be other people that will try and take that away from you. Stay true to yourself and never let anyone change that.

Is there anyone you look up to for inspiration?

Wanya: Collectively, there was this group New Edition as well as an acapella group, Take 6. There was another group called Commission as well. The Temptations and Four Tops of course influenced us a lot. We also love Motown, Marvin Gay, and the Jackson 5. All those cats and of course *NSYNC!!!

What can fan expect from you in the near future?

Nathan: We have always wanted our shows to be on a personal level and in touch with our fans. One thing we try to do is get as close to our loyal fans as possible. So lately, we have been touring around smaller venues to ensure this. When you get to the bigger venues, that intimacy is lost with the grower audience numbers. The smaller venues let us make the audience feel apart of the show. They won’t be sitting in section 300 seat 90!
We want everyone to feel special and as close to us as possible.

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment?

Nathan: Being in the business for almost 12 years, makes it really hard just to pin point one individual thing. I would personally say our career is our greatest accomplishment. The fact that we have been able to stay in this business for 12 years especially in an industry that changes constantly from day to day. This makes it tough for artists to stay in the business for long periods of time. Longevity is one of the special aspects of BOYIIMEN.

What do you love most about performing?

Wanya: Getting into the people. You can be whoever you want to be on stage. Actually, when you go out into the public, you might have to put on some type of visage. Put on something that makes people believe who you are. But, on stage you can be whatever you want. You can almost command the world. You tell them to raise their hands ad they will listen. You can ask them questions and they will answer you back. It’s just a beautiful thing. It is a truly amazing feeling.

Shawn: It is actually one of the two places I feel most at home and free to be myself. The other place is with my friends, family, and my wife. The stage is place to express myself and be free from all my worries. I am not going to be reprimanded for it. I’m not putting on a front for others, whether it is with anybody. But, on stage I can let my hair down and be loose. We are able just say what we feel and people are down with that. It is my way of escaping the madness of life.

Where would you like to see BOYIIMEN 10 years from now?

Wanya: So many artists today come in and out of the business. They go away and then come back with something big. But hopefully, BOYIIMEN will be able to do something real big in ten years. We plan on laying the groundwork now, so we could do something like that. We want to always be known for putting out great music no matter when it may be.

Chatting with Nick Cannon

One on One with Nick Cannon

Funny man Nick Cannon certainly is no new comer to show biz. Getting his big break on Nickelodeon, Nick has managed to become a regular on TV.

His latest success: MTV's Wild 'N Out.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Ralph and I’m a cancer. No! (Laughs) Hey! This is Nick Cannon. I was born October 8, 1980 that would make me a Libra, a man of balance. I like long walks in the park, goldfish, and Denny’s T Bone steak.

If you had to choose would you rather be in TV, movies, or pursue a singing career?
Right now, at this very moment, as I sit across from you, I would say music. I am so focused. I have tunnel vision when it comes to work. I haven’t had a chance to conquer music yet. There is something about the excitement. Something that makes it so much more intriguing right now. I have always wanted music before I wanted television or film. Music was the thing I wanted the most. I am very involved with the label. It’s a dream come true.

What made you decide to become a singer in addition to all of the avenues you are pursuing right now?
I am rapper not a singer!! (Laughs) I wish I could sing! I have wanted this from the beginning like I said before. I had my first demo tape when I was 8 years old. There was something about music that captivated me. My grandfather was a musician. He passed away when I was 8. He left me all his musical equipment. I didn’t know how to play any of it. There were keyboards and recording devices. It means something more to me than being just a rapper or an actor. Music is my first love. That’s what made me really want to do it.

This question is for all the single ladies out there. What do you look for in a girl?
Character, personality, and talent. No attitude. She has to have confidence and a sense of humor because I am never serious. She has to have pretty feet too!

How do you spend your free time?
I pull practical jokes with my friends. I act crazy and go to church. I always say, “My vocation is my vacation”. All of the stuff that I do whether performing or music, acting on the set, writing, doing stand up comedy, or all the crazy things that I do, I love it. Even though, at times, it seems like work. In the past 3 or 4 days, I maybe had 6 hours of sleep. But, I am not complaining because this is what I love. So when I am not doing something related to my career, I am probably going to church.

What do you hope to accomplish?
Realistically, I am going after people’s spots like Quincy Jones, Bill Cosby, and Oprah Winfrey. If I could marry Oprah, do you know how huge that would be? That would be huge!

Well, Oprah lives in Chicago. You’re in her city right now Nick!
I am trying to work it out right now! I would love to have that kind of status. I have my own television production company, In the Can Entertainment. I have my own music production company. We actually just changed the name of the music one. It was called Caveman Entertainment. We were making a name for ourselves! Then, we go and find out someone else has that name. But now, we have a really cool name. It is called Caniball Entertainment.
