This summer Celebrity Hairstylist Marcia Hamilton traveled the world keeping the Smith Family Red Carpet ready for the Karate Kid Press Tour. Together, they traveled to 8 cities with premieres spanning over a few months. Marcia was responsible for creating various looks for both Jada Pinkett-Smith and her daughter Willow. This Mother-Daughter duo made fashion statements and fans buzzing about their looks. This includes Jada’s new “Euro Bang” and Willow’s controversial “Rock Star” Mohawk.

Westwood Premiere

Inspiration: The inspiration behind the Los Angeles premiere came straight from the fashion runways displaying beautiful braids as the new accessory.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – I created a neat, large braid that laid across her head like a crown with a low chignon at the center back of the nape. This look was very simple to create. I blew the hair dry with an Ed Hardy Professional Blow Dryer using the infamous Vintage Collage Edition. I then sectioned the hair horizontally behind the ear and braided the front braid with a light wax like Purity Design’s Pure Modelling Wax, securing the braid in place with a few bobby pins. The chignon was also braided then twirled down and held in place by a bobby pin.

Willow’s leopard attire as well as her rock star persona created the inspiration behind her red carpet look. We decided the best way to compliment her fashion statement was to create a Mohawk in its natural texture that would be fierce and totally on the edge. To give it the delicate sweetheart flair, I pulled the hair off her face and pinned it back into a soft roll. For hold I used J Beverly Hills, Hold Me Spray and Purity Design’s Pure Modelling Wax to maintain the spikes in the back.

London Premiere

Inspiration: My inspiration for Jada was, modern day- Betty Page goes Euro.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – I created the talk of tour when she created her “Euro Bang”. I began by shaping a clean fringe directly above her eyes to create drama. This is always a great way to frame your clients face while drawing attention to their amazing features. The dress for the London premiere was a one shoulder covered with shimmery circular tiles, very mod and feminine. I kept the hair very simple and sleek in a low, side swept ponytail. I flat ironed the hair and fringe with the Ed Hardy Vintage Collage Professional Flat Iron and finished with Purity Design’s Pure Water Drops. A smooth sleek fringe is critical to achieve the dramatic effect you are looking to achieve.

Willow – This look was total “Camden Town Girl”. After blowing her hair straight, I flat ironed it with a bit of Purity Design’s Pure Definition Hair Spray for hold and shine. For the textured look on the ends, I pinched the hair with a wax.

Berlin Premiere

Inspiration: In Berlin, I did a slight twist on this look from the London Premiere.

Jada and Willow – I blow dried their hair with a round brush for more body and volume at the root. Next, I used a flat iron on Willow to add a slight bump to the ends to softly frame her face. Since Jada wore a really fun golden mini dress for this premiere, I kept the hair really sleek from bangs to ends and swept off the shoulders.

Madrid Premiere

Inspiration: The above 90 degree temperatures and humidity are no hairstyles’ best friend so I created these looks to withstand the heat for this premiere.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – My red carpet look for Jada was clean with a dash of spice. I styled her fringe very sleek and smooth with a little extra Purity Design’s Pure Definition Hair Spray. Next, I pulled the pony tail high and tight then added toddle waves for some texture.

Willow – We opted for a cool off the face look by braiding three mini cornrows in the front of her head and securing them with hot pink pony tail holders, leaving the rest of her hair out and smooth.

At the event in Fredricstad, Norway, I also kept Jada’s look sleek and smooth.

Paris Premiere

Inspiration: Paris the city of fashion was my true inspiration. The people of Paris are chic and sophisticated everyone looked.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – I created a “Retro Bouffant” to display the elegance and sophistication only Paris can provide. To begin, I left her fringe smooth but with a little body. To create height in the crown area, I teased it then smoothed the surface. Next, I gently brushed the hair back with a Mason Pearson Brush. All the hair remaining at the bottom was pinched, twisted and tucked then secured with bobby pins.

For Willow, I went a bit high fashion and sleeked her Mohawk back into a very Linda Evangelista look.

Tokyo Premiere

Inspiration: Finally for the Tokyo premiere, my inspiration was to go a bit “Wild”. I was really inspired by the Harujuku kids and their use of color.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – For a dramatic contrast, I added dark brown and platinum blonde extensions, chopped it into a deep asymmetric bob. The contrast was amazing and the choppiness of the cut really accentuated the blonde.

Willow- This was my time to have some fun so Willow and I agreed to play with some temporary color. I used my flat iron and a little White Sands Infinity Hair Spray to flip her hair out, showing more layers. For color, I sprayed the ends of the hair with Temporary Highlight Spray Color in Neon Purple, it was just sheer fabulosity!

For each city, I kept Jaden fresh and clean in cornrows. I was inspired by his character in the movie and his face is so adorable it must be seen from every angle. When there was down time and on some press days, we kept the fro all the way untamed. I really had a blast creating gorgeous hair around the world. Can’t wait to see what my next job has in store for me.

Hairstyling how-to by celebrity hairdresser David Babaii who created Nicole's loose waves for the 2009 Country Music Awards

To get started, I had Nicole shampoo and condition her hair with David Babaii for WildAid Amplifying Shampoo and Conditioner for volume. Plus, remember my motto: rinse, rinse rinse so you have a clean canvas. This is a must for achieving a "good hair day"!

Next, I sprayed her entire head with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and scrunched the product into her hair. This gives just the right amount of texture and movement. To create added volume while blow drying, I moved her hair in various directions. Once dry, I sectioned the hair into 3 different parts: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. This is vital because you need to have constant control over the hair at all times. I used a 1 ½" sized FHI Heat Ceramic curling iron to create these luscious loose curls.

To achieve natural looking curls and/or hide any partings, take alternating "V" shaped partings and wrap the sections around the inside of the barrel and hold for 10 seconds. Clip each curl and allow them to cool. To style, remove all the clips and rub a small amount of David Babaii for WildAid Hair Polish into your hands and finger tips. Gently run your fingers through the curls to loosen (no comb or brush, please!) Remember, your hands can be your best styling tools.

To create these loose curls, take random sections and run your fingers through to separate and define.For additional lift or volume at the scalp area, I used David Babaii for WildAid Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier. With my fingers, I lifted sections for extra volume and height.

For her red carpet look during the August 10, 2009 premiere of "Inglourious Basterds", celebrity hairdresser David Babaii created a naturally tousled look for Angelina Jolie's long tresses.

First, David applied Hair Polish to her entire mane followed by spraying Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier to the root area for lift and volume. Next, he parted hair into 3 sections (This is David’s “key” signature tip). Beginning at the nape area, he used the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment for direct styling. Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii recently coiffed his client Scarlett Johansson for a few summer Red Carpet Events, creating some dramatic variations to her long strawberry blonde locks.

To achieve this curly, wavy, sexy look for Scarlett Johansson’s appearance at Comic-Con 2009, celebrity hairstylist David Babaii applied his Amplifying Whipped Mousse from roots to ends. This gives just the right amount of volume and hold to her strawberry blonde hair.

Next, he rough dried her tresses by using his hands, moving the hair in various directions. Once dry, he sectioned her hair into 3 different parts: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. This is one of David’s most important styling tips, since you need to have constant control over the hair at all times. To create his famous wavy curls, he used a 1 ½” sized FHI Heat Ceramic Curling Iron.

To style, he took small “V” shaped strands and wrapped them around the inside of the barrel. Then, David allowed each curl to fall naturally. Through selected strands, he ran his fingers up the partially curled strand to achieve added volume. For additional lift at the scalp area, he sprayed Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier on his finger tips and applied to the root area by roughly massaging into the area. This adds added fullness and texture. After gently towel-drying her hair to remove excess water, I warmed a small amount of Hair Polish in the palms of my hands before applying it through the hair. Fernando Salas, founder of the professional hair care company White Sands, shares his tips for how to achieve the picture perfect pincurl.

Wash and condition with Phase 1 Shampoo and Conditioner.

Use 4 to 6 sprays of Porosity on wet hair for even distribution. It cures dry texture and balances moisture.

Cocktail the Firm Mousse with Designer Gel this will give you the most volume possible.

Dry hair with a flat brush and spray again with Liquid Texture Firm.

Dry the spray with hot air and recomb.

Take sections the size of a fifty-cent piece and wrap them around your fingers. As with a curling iron, wrap the sections from the inside to the outside of two or three fingers (this will determine the curl size and volume).

Next, draw the curl from your fingers and hold it pinched between your index finger and thumb. Then apply a flat iron to the curl.

Consume the curl into the flat iron and hold for about 10 seconds. Pin with a clip.

Let the curl cool. Remove clips and put your fingers through the curls. The more you comb through the hair, the looser the style will become.

As an action packed 2 and ½ hour live stage performance, Hair Department Head Russell Latham and Hairstylist Robert Wilson needed products with incredible staying power and style memory.

“With only 2 hairstylists and 2 makeup artists, you are rocking and rolling, cranking the hair out, and out, and out – and that’s where the White Sands products really help achieve those elaborate hairstyles for the tour quickly. AND the looks have to last for the entire show of heavy, full-out dancing. You have to lock-in those hairstyles for the tour, and they have to look good sideways and upside-down.”

DIY: Voluminous Curls

Clean hair was blown dry with a tiny spritz of White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Hold. Before setting with a curling iron, a tiny bit more Liquid Texture Medium Hold was applied, curling the dancers' tresses in the desired pattern of the night and clipped. Upon returning from makeup, the clippies were removed and hair would be teased at the root. Curls were then fingered out into gorgeous waves, securing the look with White Sands Infinity Hair Spray. As each dancer arrived backstage before the show, White Sands Stuck Up was applied to lock in that hairstyle for the rest of the night.

DIY: Bone Straight Tresses

Clean wet hair was lightly sprayed with White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Hold and blow dried straight. White Sands Infinity Hairspray was then applied, flat ironing this into the hair to remove frizz and create shine. Next, a dab of White Sands Smudge was rubbed between the hands and run through the hair to help keep it straight, shiny, and full of movement. Finally, on set, an application of White Sands Stuck Up was added to the front top of the dancer's hair to keep it from falling in their face as they danced.

The Making of Marilyn

For the Marilyn Monroe Wig Marlee Matlin wore in one number on tour, the Raquel Welch 'Knock Out' human hair wig was originally washed in White Sands Phase One Nourishing Shampoo and conditioned in White Sands Phase One Corrective Conditioner. The wig was then blocked and cut and shaped into the fashion of the hairdo to be created. The wig was wet-set with White Sands Liquid Texture Medium, drying under a bonnet hairdryer. The curlers were removed; the wig was lightly teased and styled into the Marilyn Monroe look, and finished with White Sands Infinity Hairspray. After each performance, the wig was just placed back in Velcro curlers and thanks to the White Sands products - it held its shape perfectly for 38 shows across the United States and Canada!

This Oscar Look is all about glamorizing the bob. After thoroughly towel drying, I applied David Babaii for WildAid Amplifying Whipped Mousse for volume and hold. I dried the hair by dividing it into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Creating small sections, start at the nape and use the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment. Dry each section with a medium round brush to smooth and create a soft round bend to the ends. Once again, section the hair into 3 sections: top with a side part, sides and back leaving the nape area free. To create waves, form "V" shaped pieces and use the David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron. Run the styling iron down the hair shaft from close to the roots to the ends to create a sleek, smooth look. Repeat, now half way down the hair shaft utilize the beveled edge by turning the styling iron (like a curling iron) to create a soft curl. Clip each curl and spray with David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray. Alternate the direction of each row of curls in order to achieve a finger wave effect. When finished, gently brush and form into soft waves using my David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray for a soft long lasting hold. To finish, I brushed back one side and secured with a decorative hair pin.

Styling Tip: Use "V" shaped sections helps to eliminate the appearance of partings.

To achieve any Oscar look, it's all about 4 main signature stages: drying, sectioning, curling and styling. David Babaii, once again shares his expert tips, dishing how he achieved Angelina Jolie's oh so gorgeous hair.

To achieve this romantic cascade of curls, I sprayed her entire head with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and scrunched it into the hair. This gives just the right texture and hold. Next, I dried her hair by dividing her tresses into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Taking small sections starting at the nape, use the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment and finish the drying process with a large round brush to smooth hair straight. At the crown area, I sprayed David Babaii for WildAid Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier to the root area and down the hair shaft. Then, I dried this section with a jumbo round brush to add lift and volume. Once dry, I sectioned the hair again using the same sectioning process as I did for blow drying. Using the David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron, I once again sectioned the hair into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. To curl, use the Styling Iron to create "ribbon curls" by taking small "V" shaped sections. To achieve, wrap the hair around and inside the styling iron close to the scalp area and pull the iron down (similar to curling ribbon). After curling the entire head, I smoothed some of the curls with a brush while leaving some intact. At the crown area, I back-brushed the hair at the scalp area only, sprayed some additional Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier and gently smoothed the surface not to remove too much of the back-brushing. Next, to create her half-up, half down look, I brushed the sides up and back and secured with pins. To complete the back, I ran my fingers up several curls to create volume and variations in texture. For a long but natural lasting hold, I used David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray.

Styling Tip: Why so much sectioning? It is vital to have constant control of your hair at all times. You will never miss an area or a section.

Funny man Jim Carrey transformed the Ace Ventura character into an instant hit with the release of the classic first film. With an infamous hairstyle to recreate, celebrity hairdresser Randa Squillacote perfectly tackled this “Ace Wave” for the release of movie’s 3rd installment: Ace Ventura Jr. White Sands hair products were on set to style the entire cast of stars. Read on for an exclusive interview full of set hair secrets and tips from Ace Ventura 3’s favorite hairdresser: Randa Squillacote.

How did you achieve Ace's signature hairstyle?

I watched all the Ace Ventura movies to figure out how Jim Carrey’s hair was styled. When I met Josh Flitter (Ace Jr) he had a great head of hair. On our prep days, I tried out different styling techniques with blow dryers, flat irons and product until we achieved the correct “Ace Wave”.

Besides Ace, did any other characters require special styling?

Ralph Waite, John Walton from the Walton’s, played Ace Jr’s grandfather. I also had to style his own hair in the “Ace Wave”. (The hair style runs in the family from B.C.) I was asked by the director if I could come up with a wig with an “Ace Wave” for Ace’s dog and I did. It is pretty funny.

Describe a typical day in the hair and makeup trailer.

We started every morning very early. The cast was so much fun. Josh would usually put on music from Queen (his favorite). There was a lot of singing and sometime dancing. We (the makeup and hair department) decorated the trailer with every type of animal we could think of. We had stuffed animals, plastic animals, pictures of animal everywhere, hanging from the ceiling to hanging on our mirrors. The crew had an average of 12 hours a day.

Which White Sands products were your on set favorites?

My favorite products for the Ace Wave is White Sands Liquid Texture Firm Hold and White Sands Infinity Liquid Texture Firm Finish Spray. It is the only product that would hold up all day (10 to 12 hours) with the heat and humidity of Florida. Maximum hold with minimal effort.
